This book by David Armine Howarth ( 1912-1991, British historian and author), is recently republished with an introduction by Andy McNab.

Snippit from the introduction:

I learnt about the Norwegian Resistance as part of my military training, but I’d been inspired by their daring attempts to sabotage the Nazi occupation since childhood. I used to watch The Heroes of Telemark with Kirk Douglas every time it was shown on TV, and despite the overlay of Hollywood glamour, I was struck by the bleakness of the terrain and moved by the amazing courage with which those men and women fought against the Germans. It was this long-held admiration that took me to the Norwegian Resistance museum in Oslo last year, and, when asked to write a foreword to this book, made me only too happy to do so.

We Die Alone is the story of one man’s ability to endure the worst imaginable and survive. Jan Baalsrud, an expatriate Norwegian
resistance fighter, is in trouble as soon as his mission begins.

  1. Sounds like a truly remarkable story.

  2. Yeah, and especially since Andy McNab has remarkably good taste in books. He loves Dickens, for instance. I’m hoping to put together a section on the ‘bookstore‘ where we have books that Andy loves and recommends.
Same with music, we know he loves Madness (as I do), so again we’re hoping to put together a section for music he recommends (again, he has pretty good taste).
The whole point of the Shop is to have all the books, videos, music, and related material in one place. The products are all on Amazon, the idea is to make a one-stop shop for McNab fans.
Believe me, for the real collector, it has been a pain in the arse to find the books and media we’re interested in — we used to post links to a message board just because we found a vaguely-related SAS book.
So, any suggestions for books or videos we’ve missed will be really appreciated. I would have loved to have it all in one place when I first started collecting, rather than having to search…and search…and search….

  3. Great idea to have a sections for AM’s favourites and recommendations, shall look forward to seeing those!

BTW, any idea what happened to his Underwear line?

  4. Him ‘going commando’ I guess he felt no need to develop it anymore, assuming we’d follow his example :p

  5. “So, any suggestions for books or videos we’ve missed will be really appreciated” – I don’t know whether you’ve missed it or not (a search of the site came back without result), but you should probably include “Touching the Void” by Joe Simpson – the book from which Andy learnt how to write Bravo Two Zero.

  6. Thanks for the tip! Done.
