STOKE-ON-TRENT LITERARY FESTIVAL will be the first of its kind in the area with the aim of giving local people the opportunity to find out more about the art and craft of writing and the joys of reading.

The festival in the factory, also known as Hot Air giving a nod to Stoke-on-Trent’s historic background, will be held at the Emma Bridgewater Factory on Lichfield Street on Friday 20th, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June 2014.

Over 15 nationally known and local authors will be present during the weekend including names such as Joanna Trollope, David Starkey, Andy McNab, Melvyn Bragg, Lauren Child and Emma Bridgewater.  Each author event will give festival goers the opportunity to enter into the debate and question the experts in their own fields.

Festival Trustees include Tristram Hunt MP, Matthew Rice and Emma Bridgewater. Andy McNab is also the festival’s patron.

“By any standards, Andy McNab is a phenomenon. A much decorated former SAS soldier, one of the world’s best selling authors, a much in demand lecturer, and a tireless spokesperson and fundraiser for both military and literacy charities. The founding Patron of the Stoke Literary Festival raises the curtain on the first ever festival talking both about his new novel Fortress but also his passionate advocacy of literacy across the generations.”

Romford Recorder, 30 January 2014

Mysterious military author Andy McNab has helped teach school students the value of education.

The former SAS sergeant turned writer visited St Edward’s Church of England School & Sixth Form College in London Road, Romford, ahead of National Storytelling Week, which starts on Monday.

The best-selling author of Bravo Two Zero, who famously hides his face, spoke of being a disillusioned student, recruited to the army at 16 after being sent to a juvenile detention centre.

And after being given children’s book Janet and John by his captain to improve his reading, he never looked back.

He said: “I have never forgotten what my captain told me, ‘reading gives you knowledge and gives you choices in life.’”

Year 12 student Jack Barnes, said: “I read some of his Boy Soldier series when I was younger so to meet the man behind them was incredible. He was very easy to relate to and cool!”

The inspiring story caused an upsurge in books borrowed from the school library, and deputy head of English, Kellyann Brown, said: “He showed the students that through reading you can be successful whatever your background.”
