Lots of articles about Jason Statham being in sight to perform Nick Stone in the upcoming movie Echelon, based on the Andy McNab novel ‘Firewall’. I’m not going to post them all here. We know Andy McNab said ages ago he would like Jason Statham to get the Nick Stone part “since he’s such a nice guy”. We’ll see but time is running and it won’t be long until we’ll know for sure, so… to be continued!

The articles also say that Hyde Park will try to sell Echelon at the Berlin movie festival and that a director has been found.. Simon Crane – a ’stunt coordinator previously known for his work on Angelina Jolie vehicles  The Tourist and Salt’. It will be his directors debut. Good luck Simon, don’t let Andy’s many fans down!

Andy McNab, the SAS hero turned best-selling author, put his imagination to good use this weekend when, at a charity benefit to raise money for Street Child of Sierra Leone, he auctioned the opportunity to become a character in one of his books.

The winning bid came from the somewhat unlikely source of Frank Timis, the Romanian-born mining and oil multi-millionaire, who parted with a colossal £115,000 for the chance to see himself on the same pages as McNab’s main protagonist, Nick Stone.

With film plans in motion for the Nick Stone series, Timis, 47, may also find himself as a character on the silver screen. Mandrake does not doubt this little detail occurred to him as he was clinching the deal.

Naar aanleiding van de publicatie van Andy McNab’s  ‘De Afghanistan-Missie’ – de Nederlandse vertaling van War Torn – was Andy in Nederland voor interviews… en Grey Man’s Land was erbij!!

Dankzij de lieve dames van Uitgeverij AW Bruna  mocht ik Andy ‘ergens in Amsterdam’ interviewen. Gewassen en gestreken – en met knikkende knieën – was ik ruimschoots op tijd (lees: natuurlijk veel te vroeg, kon niet wachten!) op de afgesproken plaats. Hier kon ik me onder het genot van een luxe kopje thee nog even mentaal voorbereiden. Aan mijn flank mijn persoonlijke bodyguard, want je weet tenslotte maar nooit. Je gaat toch een hooggetrainde elite soldaat ontmoeten, met dodelijke handen – danwel ogen!

En dan is ie daar… Eerste indruk: Over zijn fameuze blauwe ogen is geen woord gelogen, zie foto voor het bewijs!

Ik krijg een stevige handdruk en een brede lach: al zou het gesprek de mist in gaan (hij zal toch onderhand wel vermoeid zijn na twee dagen gedwongen binnen zitten?) mijn dag kan niet meer stuk!!  Wat verder opvalt is dat hij zo levendig, vriendelijk en correct overkomt.  En van een eventuele vermoeidheid laat hij niks merken. Twee dagen interviews krijgen hem niet in de stress.
Ach natuurlijk niet… het is Andy McNab!

Een prachtige locatie, omringd door honderden boeken en een prettig gezelschap.. wat wil een mens nog meer!! Uiteindelijk heb ik bijna anderhalf uur met Andy mogen kletsen. Dat wil zeggen… hij kletste en ik knikte, hummde en noteerde.

Meer dan eens een klaterende lach en heel veel woorden. Vooral over het boek  ‘De Afghanistan Missie’ dat hij schreef in samenwerking met Kym Jordan. Maar we spraken ook over de Nick Stone film ‘Echelon’, ForceSelect, het regisseren van ‘De Jonge Soldaat’ (Boy Soldier) en natuurlijk over de nieuwe Nick Stone ‘Zero Hour’ die in november (in het Engels) gepubliceerd wordt. En nog veel meer.

Andy geeft heel uitgebreid antwoord op alle vragen. Ik neem graag voor lief dat daardoor niet al mijn vragen beantwoord zijn. Dat ligt tenslotte ook zeker aan de hoeveelheid vragen die ik op papier had staan. Tja.. als het om Andy gaat willen we gewoon alles weten! Gelukkig krijg ik de belofte de overige vragen later dit jaar te mogen stellen. ‘To be continued’ zullen we maar zeggen! Jippie!!

Goed nieuws voor Nederland: in februari 2011 wordt door Uitgeverij Bruna de Nederlandse vertaling van ‘Exit Wound’ gepubliceerd, onder de naam ‘Oorlogswond’ . En dan gelijk in mei daarna is de Nederlandse vertaling van ‘Zero Hour’ gepland (titel nog onbekend). De fans van Andy McNab worden door Bruna in de watten gelegd.

En dan nog een klein tipje van de ‘Zero Hour’ sluier: Na alle plaatsen die Nick Stone al bezocht heeft doet hij in deel 13 eindelijk Amsterdam aan! Die Balaclava in de Amsterdamse haven was Andy McNab op verkenning!

Natuurlijk was Andy ook genegen om mijn vers-van-de-pers exemplaar van ‘De Afghanistan-Missie’ te signeren. Wat hij erin geschreven heeft houd ik lekker voor mezelf maar ik kan je wel vertellen… ik was zeer vereerd!!

Nu de taak om het interview uit te werken, nog een aardige klus maar ik doe mij best!! Dus tot gauw.. enneh..geniet van de foto, dat doe ik ook!! Heel veel dank aan Uitgeverij Bruna en natuurlijk aan Andy McNab voor een geweldige ontmoeting…. you’re the best!

Quite a few articles about Eric Bana  being ‘leading contender’ to play Nick Stone. We’ll have to wait and see if he gets the part – but at least there’s news on the movie ‘Echelon’ which is good! No director yet it seems, but who knows… Andy gets some experience directing Boy Soldier.. he might take up the job himself!

Andy was a guest on the Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show Podcast yesterday where in talks – in a suit – about buses, about War Torn being 500 pages (who ripped out 28 pages of my copy??), Andys formula of writing, the upcoming Nick Stone movie, Andys new job as a director for a Boy Soldier movie, Andy bluffing, politics, Afghanistan and there’s a big challenge….

Nick Stone Movie Is On The Way – Echelon is based on Andy McNab’s novels

Move over, Jason Bourne – there’s a new movie spy in town, and his name is Nick Stone.

Stone, in case you didn’t know, is the hero of the long-running series of novels by ex-SAS hardnut and Heat shoot-out co-ordinator, Andy McNab. In the ultimate example of ‘write-what-you-know’, Stone is also an ex-SAS hardnut, constantly getting mixed up in all sorts of political intrigue that warrant solving with extreme violence.

So far the Stone series has stretched to twelve books, the rights to which have just been snapped up by Hyde Park and casting director-turned-producer, Bonnie Timmerman. Timmerman first bought the rights in the mid-90s, sold them to Harvey Weinstein in 2001, and has now got them back again after they were allowed to lapse.

The first Stone movie in the works is an adaptation of the third novel, Firewall, which will be renamed Echelon for the silver screen (presumably to avoid people confusing it with the Harrison Ford clunker of the same name). And yes, they’re talking franchise…

Firew – sorry, Echelon will see Stone team up with a female cryptographer (shades of Dan Brown) to infiltrate a computer facility that could jeopardise global security. Action! Intrigue! Hot ladies! It’s got it all.

The script has been written by McNab himself and a fellow called John Connor who, with a name like that, was simply born to write action movies. Ashok Amritraj, head of Hyde Park, will produce along with Timmerman.

Sounds like it could be promising, although we won’t be happy until Jack Reacher has stomped, punched and grimaced his way onto the big screen…
